On August 29,1996, the Ad Hoc Transition Committee presented a mission statement for the Saint Luke’s Foundation to the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of Saint Luke’s Hospital Association. The first mission read as follows: “The Saint Luke’s Foundation seeks to foster and improve health status and well-being of the people of Northeast Ohio, with special emphasis on those living in areas traditionally served by Saint Luke’s Medical Center. To fulfill this mission, the foundation provides funding support for initiatives focused on general health and wellness, health and medical education, medical research and healthcare delivery.” The original assets of the Foundation were approximately $47M from the hospital’s endowment and $25M from the purchase price of the hospital. The first President and CEO was the President of the former hospital, Sam Huston, and the first board chairman was Frank Beam, the chair of the board of what had been the Saint Luke’s Medical Center.
